Sometimes, the most meaningful learning happens outside the classroom, when young minds are given the space to explore, express and connect through shared experiences. Earlier this July, a group of talented Visual Arts students from St. François Girls’ College, along with one student from Queen's Royal College, embarked on a journey that would do just that.

From July 6–9, 2025, under the guidance of Visual Arts teacher Mrs. Kizzy La Fon-Whisky, 14 students and five chaperones, travelled to Panama for an immersive, experiential art programme. Organised by artist and SFGC alum, Anika Plowden-Corentin and Spanish Lecturer, Aleah Guitan, the trip was designed to foster creative exchange between Trinbagonian and Panamanian artists. The mission: to learn, to grow, and to represent their schools and country with pride.

The initiative, which received financial support from the St. François Girls' College Alumnae Association (SFGCA), aimed to strengthen the cultural bridge between Trinbagonian and Panamanian artists. At every turn, our Little Sisters were immersed in a rich, artistic environment, meeting with designers, craftspeople, visual artists, lecturers, and even diplomats. In each interaction, they were reminded of the value of consistency, passion, and resilience in the creative process.

According to Mrs. La Fon-Whisky, "The programme was a successful one, where the students were exposed to art at every turn they made and felt the love and appreciation that is placed on the craft they love."

Additionally, the students had the opportunity to collaborate and connect with their Panamanian peers from Colón. Language was no barrier; both sides made efforts to learn and use each other’s languages, creating a warm and inclusive space for cultural exchange and creative exploration.

During the program, the group was invited to several key venues including museums, artist studios, and creative workshops. Their visit left such an impression that the music students of St. François Girls’ College have already received an invitation to perform at a festival in Colón this October.

The relationship has also extended beyond the visit with representatives from the Panama Embassy in Trinidad being invited to attend the College's "Pan on d Hill" event. Two embassy officials were present for the showcase on July 12 and they expressed their appreciation for the sweet sounds of steelpan and the warmth of the SFGC community.

As a capstone to the experience, student artwork created during the programe will be featured at an exhibition at the Panama Embassy in Port of Spain from July 25 to 28. This display will coincide with a ministerial meeting, offering national and regional leaders a glimpse into the creative talents nurtured at SFGC. A public exhibition is also planned for September on the College compound - alums and supporters are encouraged to attend and celebrate the students' growth and achievements.

The incredible opportunity was made possible for our Little Sisters by the unwavering support of teachers, parents, organizers, sponsors, and the SFGCA. In the end, it was more than a cultural exchange, it was a spark that promises new opportunities, lasting partnerships, and a bright future for the Arts at St. François Girls’ College.

May this serve as a gentle reminder that every time an alum pays their membership dues, donates, or volunteers, they’re helping to create more moments like this. Experiences that shape lives, spark futures, and carry the spirit of St. François far beyond Belmont. As we look ahead to the 2025–2026 academic year, we invite you to be part of this ongoing legacy.

Help us make a difference — one girl, one opportunity, one journey at a time.
